Design & Technology

About the Department

Mr. Gary Duckering is the Head of Department. Additional staff members are Mr. Christopher Cook and the part-time Technician, Mr. Morris Hancock.

The Design and Technology Department is purpose built and home to two multimedia classrooms with LCD projectors and interactive whiteboards, a large well-equipped workshop, a CNC machinery room housing milling and routing machines, 24 computer workstations and a dedicated display area.

The subject is taught through a project-based approach. Pupils learn by experience and are encouraged to learn by individual development of their skills and knowledge in the pursuit of excellence in design and making. No two years are the same, delivery of the subject and design projects are always changing and being updated.

The department rightly has an outstanding reputation and work here greatly enhances the significant reputation of the Art & Design Department with which it works closely. A significant numbers of pupils has proceeded to related degree courses, for instance in Product Design. The Department boasts a close relationship with Sheffield Hallam University.

Trips, Visits & Competitions

Throughout the academic year there are a number of trips designed to broaden the pupils knowledge, bring aspects of the course alive and to reinforce areas of learning about Design and Technology. Recent examples include trips to manufacturing centres, retail outlets and exhibitions and museums.

We also organise an annual exhibition at Speech Day to spotlight pupils’ achievements and showcase their work.
