Sport

Playing sport is an important part of life at Worksop College and your child will be encouraged to participate, for we measure sporting achievement by physical health and enjoyment as well as the self worth gained from the many chances to represent one’s house or school.

The College offers a great variety of sporting opportunity to tempt those who may not think of themselves as ‘sporty’ or competitive. The benefits of playing sport are far-reaching and play an important part in helping your son or daughter to understand both the health benefits and the concepts of leadership and team work.

The 300 acre estate offers enviable space and facilities such as county cricket standard grounds, immaculate rugby and hockey pitches including an astro turf surface. Each sport has its own area ensuring the best possible surface and conditions. These include netball and tennis courts, an athletics track, an indoor swimming pool, squash courts and a modern Sports Hall with a fully equipped gym.

Each term sees a major sport for both girls and boys, as listed below, with a large number of teams and fixtures catering for all abilities, as the calendar will testify. Games is timetabled two afternoons a week, with additional practices and training sessions occurring at other times of the day.

Michaelmas Term - Hockey (Girls), Rugby (Boys)
Lent Term - Netball (Girls), Hockey (Boys)
Summer Term - Tennis (Girls), Cricket (Boys)

Sporting Excellence

As in all aspects of College life, our pupils are encouraged to strive for excellence and we ensure there is a programme in place to enable our best sportsmen and women to play at the very highest levels.

Many participate in county or regional sport and in recent years our pupils have also represented their country in cricket, rugby, girls’ and boy’ hockey and golf. Bursary funding and sports awards have helped us to attract many talented poupils to the College and for the most outstanding we run a bespoke Elite Sports programme. This includes advice on nutrition, expert coaching, attending relevant lectures and media training.

This commitment to sporting excellence has achieved considerable success, way beyond what might be expected from a school of our size, such as unbeaten fixture lists for a number of teams, the girls’ hockey team being county champions or the boys’ hockey team reaching the national finals.

External coaches in all major sports augment our own staff’s skills and links with local Sports Academies, such as Trent Bridge, further strengthen the quality of our provision.

Sports Tours

Team building is often enhanced by overseas tours. In recent years there have been a range of tours for the major sports, examples of which are listed below:

  • Hockey - to South Africa
  • Netball - to the Mediterranean
  • Rugby - to Canada
  • Cricket - to Sri Lanka
