Pathologist Talks to Sixth Formers
Visiting speaker, Consultant Histopathologist Dr. Suzanne Rogers, introduced Worksop College Sixth Formers to the world of pathology this week in a fascinating talk about her occupation as a pathologist.
Dr. Rogers explained that post mortems are necessary not just in cases of suspicious or violent death, but they are in fact required for any death where the deceased has not recently been under medical care.
Speaking to an enraptured audience, Dr. Rogers presented the facts of four recent cases and coached the audience to use their investigative powers to begin to diagnose the causes of death using lifestyle, health history and circumstances of death as key pointers.
After her talk Dr. Rogers answered questions from the audience revealing that whilst an NHS autopsy might cost around £350 the post mortem on a suspicious death would always be referred to a Home Office Pathologist and could cost thousands of pounds.
