Railway Engineering Career Initiative at Birmingham University
During 3 days in July, LVIth form pupil, Katie Butcher, was one of 37 students from across the country who took part in the Railways Systems Engineering course at the University of Birmingham, a residential course run by The Smallpeice Trust.
The pupils explored a range of subjects including aerodynamics, crashworthiness, signalling, train control and wheel rail adhesion and, split into two teams, competed against one another to design, build and test crash proof vehicles.
These hands-on activities allowed the students to gain a real understanding of the challenges facing the railway engineering industry and how engineers can develop practical solutions.
It was undoubtedly a most inspiring glimpse into the career opportunities in this fast moving sector.
